The snow line begins at around 1,500 m.

Mountains are the perfect place for a number of snow-related activities and sports. However, we must remind you that, in this season, you must respect all safety rules and regulations. For some activities, consider being accompanied by a professional guide who knows the mountains.

The larches in our forests have lost their needles; the pines remain green.

The aerology of the mountains makes air sports, such as hang-gliding and para-gliding, possible.

Rivers are unfit for activities in winter. Lakes and streams in the mountains are frozen over, and the rivers in the valleys are at their lowest levels.

Temperatures in the mountains are often below freezing, but the dry climate is very invigorating.

Snow starts melting as the weather gets warmer. Backcountry skiing is popular at this time of year, and downhill skiing is best in the morning.

The larch forests take on an incredible green color, and nature reawakens, becoming more vibrant with each day.

You can practice outdoor activities in this season, and discover the luxurious nature with flowers blooming and wild animals abounding.

The air gets warm in early afternoon, which allows more and more planes to take off. You can travel longer distances.

Streams swell as snow run-off feeds them, then they get turbulent.

Rivers swell each day, until they become theaters for epic duels between rapids and thrill-seekers.

Temperatures become milder in the valleys, but often remain chilly in the mountains.

There are strong contrasts between daytime and nighttime temperatures.

Participants in mountain races should wear warm clothes.

The larch forests start turning orange, then red, then cover the forest floor with a carpet of needles.

The first snows sprinkle their powder on the peaks.

Planes can fly in the afternoon, and many aircraft can be seen criss-crossing the sky.

The rivers and streams have calmed down, and canyoning is possible in some locations.

The temperatures lower each day. Autumn often hesitates to let winter take over.

The light and visibility of the air and sky are simply incredible !

Spring...

Spring earth :

At this time of year, outdoor activities depend on weather conditions, and ESPECIALLY on the altitude at which the snow line begins.

Early spring is a great time for snowshoeing; however, before you head out you should check on the accessibility and safety of the circuit you have chosen.

Hiking is possible, at first on marked trails (or circuits) in the valleys or in the highlands. All outdoor activities in the Pays du Guillestrois become possible gradually as the snows melt.

The same is true for mountain biking on our FFC-approved trails.

Cycling is possible on the main roads of the Pays du Guillestrois. In spring, if you wish to cross the mythical mountain passes of the Hautes-Alpes, make sure to check if they are open.

Spring air :

The contrast between daytime and nighttime temperatures increases progressively. The rocks and forests of the surrounding slopes absorb heat quickly, which they radiate toward the sky in early afternoon.
These conditions last until sundown. These moving, ascendant air masses are greatly appreciated for all air sports.

Spring water :

As the winter snow melts, the streams and rivers swell inordinately.

In this season, white water sports can be practiced by those with a good amount of experience.

In early June, the Durance and Guil Rivers are playgrounds for thousands of water sports lovers who come to enjoy the foamy rapids.

In Autumn...

Autumn earth :

Visitors to the Pays du Guillestrois take advantage of the warm, sunny days with fewer tourists than in the summer.

All activities (cycling, mountain biking, etc.) can be practiced, and the conditions are optimal for mountain hikes.
The days get short quickly, however, so you’ll need to leave early to get to the peaks around noon.

Autumn air :

The beautiful autumn days generate warm air bubbles in early afternoon that make flying enjoyable.

Autumn water :

In autumn, white water sports can be practiced until early November; after that time, rivers and streams get too shallow and the weather is too cold.
Some waterfalls are even gone by then.
Then the first early-morning frosts come, leaving behind beautiful ice crystal sculptures on the banks of the rivers and streams.

All year round ...

Walks and hikes. Cycling.

In fishing season (early March to the beginning of winter): fishing in rivers, streams or mountain lakes.
