Guillestre
 
Guillestre is a crossroads and the meeting-place for the many towns and villages of the Pays du Guillestrois, the Queyras, and the ski resorts of Vars and Risoul.

Guillestre has a long tradition of welcoming visitors and providing a wide range of activities: sports, culture and festive activities are held here year-round.

Beautiful mountain landscapes: Pic de Guillestre (2,533 m).

The Guil Gorges with green and pink marble scree .

Viewpoint indicator on a rocky spur.

Rortie National Forest (Austrian black pines).

The Plan de Phazy hot springs with pools accessible to the public.

Guillestre is the gateway to the Queyras Regional Natural Park.

Vestiges of old ramparts with four gates, each one crowned with an effigy of its saint, and vestiges of a 12th century castle. The Eygliers Tower was a defensive piece of the ramparts.

The Church of the Assumption, a 16th-century Gothic church in pink marble with its “Réal” entrance supported by columns with recumbent lions at their feet. The entrance is fully centered with a monumental door with sculpted leaves from the 16th century and a spectacular lock.

A magnificent three-storey, square bell tower, with a beautiful sundial on its southern side.

Historical information

Guillestre was inhabited in the Gallic period, and there remain many ancient and even prehistoric vestiges.

The Plan de Phazy hot springs were known in Roman times for their curative properties.

The town center was built in the 12th century.

The seat of a seigneury, Guillestre belonged to the Archbishop of Embrun, a prince of the Empire.
